Retrofit smart locks are the single best upgrade most renters can make — but only if they pick the right one. The wrong choice can mean a voided lease, a failed installation, or a door that ignores your phone at 1am. We exist to make the right choice obvious.
Our renter‑friendly focus runs through every review we publish. Most smart lock roundups skew toward homeowners who can drill, replace deadbolts, and sign up for subscription access plans. We optimise for renters who need reversibility, landlord compliance, and low ongoing cost — without sacrificing security.
Data‑Driven Research
Every recommendation is grounded in verified third‑party data — never personal opinion or brand copy. Our primary sources include:
- Manufacturer technical specifications
- ANSI/BHMA certified lab databases
- CSA Matter Certified Device Registry
- Independent third‑party lab reports
- Aggregated verified buyer sentiment
Reader First, Always
Our rankings are never influenced by brands, affiliate rates, or ad budgets. If a lock underperforms in public data, we say so — clearly and without softening it for commercial reasons.
Affiliate links are disclosed clearly and never influence rankings. Commissions are earned after a purchase is made — editorial decisions are made first, commercial relationships follow.
Quarterly Updates
Smart home tech moves fast. We revisit every review every 90 days and update whenever firmware changes, certification status shifts, or a better option emerges. Scores change when the data changes.
We monitor new releases from August, Schlage, Level, Aqara, and Yale on a rolling basis. Nothing on this site sits untouched for more than one calendar quarter.
Our Editorial Methodology
We don't own a single lock. Every score on this site is the product of structured desk research and multi‑source data synthesis. Here's exactly how it works — no black boxes.
For a detailed breakdown of how each criterion is weighted and applied, see our full review methodology page.
Source Collection
We gather manufacturer technical documentation, ANSI/BHMA certification filings, and official Matter Certified Device Registry entries from the CSA for every lock under review. No marketing copy is used as a primary source.
Third‑Party Cross‑Reference
Claims are validated against independent lab reports, published expert reviews from established tech outlets, and firmware changelogs. Conflicting data points are flagged and resolved through additional sourcing before anything is published.
Ecosystem Compatibility Analysis
Matter, Thread, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Alexa compatibility is verified using the official CSA certified products registry — not brand claims. See our Matter 1.4 smart locks guide for a practical breakdown of what each certification version actually means.
Structured Scoring
Eight weighted categories — security grade, ecosystem compatibility, install ease, battery life, app quality, offline reliability, price‑to‑value, and renter suitability — produce a composite score. The full weighting breakdown is documented in our methodology.
Quarterly Audit
Every published review is re‑evaluated every 90 days. Scores change when the data changes — firmware updates, new certifications, and market shifts all feed back into rankings. The date on every product card reflects the last audit, not the original publish date.
Transparency First
No free units. No paid placements. Affiliate links are clearly disclosed and never influence which products we recommend or how they are ranked. Commercial relationships follow editorial decisions — not the reverse.
Why No Physical Testing?
Retrofit Smart Lock launched in 2026 as a research‑first publication. Independent lab testing requires certified facilities and equipment we have not yet built out. We believe it's more honest to aggregate what expert labs and verified buyers already report than to simulate testing conditions we haven't replicated in a controlled environment.
Future plans include selective in‑house testing to complement our structured research — starting with installation time measurement, Bluetooth range, and auto‑unlock consistency. Until then, every score reflects the best available third‑party evidence, structured and compared clearly. Learn more about our current data sources and limitations.
Independent · Unbiased · Transparent
These are the three commitments we hold ourselves to on every page of this site. If you ever find something that doesn't live up to that standard, let us know.
