What Is a Retrofit Smart Lock — and Is It Right for You?
A retrofit smart lock upgrades your existing deadbolt from the inside only. Unlike a full smart deadbolt replacement (which swaps out the entire lock, exterior cylinder included), a retrofit lock attaches to your existing thumb turn — leaving the outside of your door completely unchanged. Your original keys still work. Your landlord sees nothing different. This is why retrofit is the best smart lock for renters — and frankly, for anyone who values simplicity.
Compatibility: Does It Work With Your Door?
The vast majority of retrofit smart locks are designed for single-cylinder deadbolts — the most common door lock type in North America. This means a keyed exterior cylinder with a thumb turn on the interior. Before buying, confirm:
- Lock type: Single-cylinder deadbolt (most apartments and homes qualify)
- Throw length: Most require a minimum 1-inch deadbolt throw
- Backset: Standard 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" backsets both work
- Door thickness: Anything between 1-3/8" and 1-3/4" is standard and supported
European, Scandinavian, and multi-point lock systems require a different class of retrofit lock (see our Nuki review above). If you're outside North America, always check compatibility charts before purchasing.
Battery Life: What to Realistically Expect
Almost every retrofit lock runs on AA or CR2 batteries. Based on manufacturer specifications and independent third-party reviewer long-term reports at 10–15 lock/unlock cycles per day, here's what the data consistently shows:
3–5 months
Wi-Fi enabled locks
6–12 months
Bluetooth-only locks
12–18 months
Thread-based locks
Enable low-battery alerts in your app — every major lock supports this. We recommend keeping a spare set of batteries in your junk drawer. Running out of battery doesn't lock you out (your physical key still works), but it's an annoying experience to avoid.
Matter & Thread: Do You Need the New Standard?
Matter is the new universal smart home standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung. A Matter compatible retrofit lock will work across all platforms simultaneously — no choosing sides. Thread is the wireless protocol Matter uses for ultra-low-latency, battery-efficient communication.
Our verdict: If you're buying for the long term (3+ years), buy Matter-ready. The Aqara U400, Nuki Ultra, and Level Lock+ all qualify. If you're just want the best experience today and don't care about platform flexibility, the August Wi-Fi remains the gold standard.
The Bottom Line for Renters
Retrofit smart locks are the single best upgrade renters can make. No permission needed. No modifications to the property. Fully reversible in under 10 minutes. And the quality gap vs. full smart deadbolts has almost entirely closed in 2026. The only question is which one — and that's exactly why this guide exists. See the dedicated renters guide →
